Nurses Can Be Such Angels.

We mothers know firsthand the huge difference a caring, respectful and knowledgeable nurse can have on our experience of labor and delivery. Besides our spouses (and labor support team if you were blessed to have one), nurses were probably the ones who took care of us the most through the entire labor and postpartum experience while we were in the hospital.

I clearly remember the faces and names of the nurses who really stood out in caring for me and my babies for both births. Dominic developed high levels of jaundice soon after he was born which had us spend an entire week at the hospital with our precious first born out of my arms and in an incubator for what seemed like to me an eternity. As first time parents we were wrought with worry and exhaustion and there were so many, many tears. Jessica, a nurse who took care of us several times that week, was like a ray of sunshine during those frosty, teary February days in Prince Edward Island. She reassured us, explained things in ways we would understand, answered any and all of our questions, and most of all she was sympathetic and respectful of our opinions and concerns. She was our advocate in an emotional and difficult time, and for that we will forever remember her with such gratitude.

My Future Support Team?

That’s why this week, I couldn’t be prouder of my little sister who is in her second year as a L&D nurse – an incredible one at that! She has the most generous heart, an eye for detail, a kind spirit, and on top of that, she’s super smart and artistically talented: the featured image for this post is an incredible hand-drawn piece she created.

I would be lying if I said we felt that we’re all done with two kids. I’m hoping she will be part of my team if/and when our family is ready to grow. I love you, little sister! Know you are truly making a difference in the lives of every family you encounter through your work!

And a big thank you to all nurses out there! I know it’s a profession you’ve chosen because you have a noble, beautiful heart and a passion to really help and cure people on a personal level. Thank you for your dedication, sacrifice and love!
